Gamma-Ray Pulsar Visibility

چکیده
PSR J0437-4715 is a millisecond pulsar (MSP) thought to be “pair formation starved” (having limited pair cascades due to magnetic photon absorption). Fortunately the general relativistic (GR) electrodynamical model under consideration applicable to this pulsar have few free parameters. We model PSR J0437-4715’s visibility [1], using a 3D model which incorporates the variation of the GR E-field over the polar cap (PC), taking different observer and inclination angles into account. Using this pulsar as a case study, one may generalize to conducting a pulsar population visibility study. We lastly comment on the role of the proposed South African SKA (Square Kilometre Array) prototype, KAT (Karoo Array Telescope), for GLAST γ-ray pulsar identification.

Unidentified Gamma-Ray Sources as Ancient Pulsar Wind Nebulae
In this paper we explore the evolution of a PWN while the pulsar is spinning down. An MHD approach is used to simulate the evolution of a composite remnant. Particular attention is given to the adiabatic loss rate and evolution of the nebular field strength with time. By normalising a two component particle injection spectrum (which can reproduce the radio and X-ray components) at the pulsar wi...
متن کاملFuture Facilities for Gamma-Ray Pulsar Studies
Pulsars seen at gamma-ray energies offer insight into particle acceleration to very high energies, along with information about the geometry and interaction processes in the magnetospheres of these rotating neutron stars. During the next decade, a number of new gamma-ray facilities will become available for pulsar studies. This brief review describes the motivation for gamma-ray pulsar studies,...
متن کاملThe Gamma Ray Pulsar Population
We apply a likelihood analysis to pulsar detections, pulsar upper limits, and diffuse background measurements from the OSSE and EGRET instruments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory to constrain the luminosity law for gamma-ray pulsars and some properties of the gamma-ray pulsar population. We find that the dependence of luminosity on spin period and dipole magnetic field is much steeper at OS...
متن کاملVery High Energy Gamma Rays from the Vela Pulsar Direction
We have observed the Vela pulsar region at TeV energies using the 3.8 m imaging Čerenkov telescope near Woomera, South Australia between January 1993 and March 1995. Evidence of an unpulsed gamma-ray signal has been detected at the 5.8 σ level. The detected gamma-ray flux is (2.9± 0.5± 0.4)× 10 photons cm sec above 2.5± 1.0 TeV and the signal is consistent with steady emission over the two year...
متن کاملDiscovery of an Unidentified Fermi Object as a Black Widow-like Millisecond Pulsar
The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has revolutionized our knowledge of the gamma-ray pulsar population, leading to the discovery of almost 100 gamma-ray pulsars and dozens of gamma-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Although the outer-gap model predicts different sites of emission for the radio and gamma-ray pulsars, until now all of the known gamma-ray MSPs have been visible in the radio. Here w...
